Breastfed babies get all the nutrition they need and a boost to the immune system right from the start.

Mills-Peninsula annually applauds this healthy choice with a photo contest and other community activities in support of World Breastfeeding Week, Aug. 1-7. Started in 1990, this global event aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.

In 2007, Mills-Peninsula sponsored the Oh, Baby! Photo Contest, attracting dozens of entries featuring healthy, breastfed babies. In downtown San Mateo, we hung a banner, reading: "Breast milk: Organic. All natural. Best for your baby." The Mills-Peninsula World Breastfeeding Week Picnic brings together members of our breastfeeding support groups. The public also is welcome to attend the picnic, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the first Saturday in August, at Washington Park, 850 Burlingame Avenue in Burlingame.

Benefits of breastfeeding include:

  • Gives babies complete nutrition until about 4 to 6 months of age

  • Provides antibodies that strengthen a baby's immune system

  • Stimulates release of a hormone that helps women recover more quickly following delivery

  • Breastfed babies are less likely to experience ear infections, allergies, vomiting, diarrhea, pneumonia, wheezing and meningitis

  • New moms who breastfeed may find it easier to lose pregnancy weight

  • Convenience! Nothing to buy or warm, and breast milk is always available
